Skin Needling
Skin needling is a way of smoothing the skin, softening wrinkles, scars, stretch marks etc, and increasing the effectiveness of skin care products. Increased levels of the essential vitamins produce better skin appearance and texture with greater normalisation of the skin and more deposition of collagen. The facial roller instrument allows increased penetration of vitamins into the active layers of the skin through the needling, causing micro channels into the horny layer of the surface of the skin. This layer is the main obstruction to entry into the skin. Once this layer has been breached the active ingredients in the skin care products can reach into the depths of the skin about 10 000 times more effectively than by simply applying the products to the surface of intact skin. The higher the levels of vitamins that can penetrate into the lower epidermis the more collagen that can be made, therefore encouraging natural collagenesis.
Skin needling is very old technology, having been discovered to be effective in the 1940s, but the methods of performing it have become more sophisticated as time has gone by, such that instead of being a tedious and basically non viable treatment for large areas or home use, the latest methods of application have broadened the scope of use of this well studied, tried and tested treatment.
HOW DOES IT WORK?The needles of the facial roller repeatedly penetrate the skin, breaking old collagen strands that have formed scar tissue, and stimulating new collagen growth. Because the needle penetrates rather than removes the epidermis there is rapid healing without scarring. The skin swells in response to the injury and the holes become closed because of the swelling and the edges are mended.
Medical skin needling involves anaesthetising the area and piercing the skin down to the dermis, causing pin point bleeding. This results in resurfacing of the area that is more rapid, most scarring, lines, pigmentation problems etc showing good improvement in 4 - 6 treatments. Medical skin needling provides a stepwise moderately paced improvement to skin texture and defects, with negligible side effects.
AT HOME TREATMENTS
Cosmetic skin needling involves piercing the epidermis only, and is done at home as part of the daily routine. It results in mild redness only, and no bleeding at all. It is slow to yield results, and may take 6 - 12 months to show significant improvement in lines, wrinkles, and other problems, but there is no healing time to be concerned about, and the roller is inexpensive. Treatment time can range from 5 - 10 minutes depending on the speed, accuracy and density. It should be repeated between two to seven times a week. The more frequent the treatment the better the result. The cosmetic roller provides a long term, side effect free, gentle and slow resurfacing.
